Metcal soldering irons use a Curie Point tip to regulate temperature. The Power Supply provides constant HF signal to a coil in the Hand-piece. The RF supplied to the handpiece produces eddy currents in the tip when it is below its Curie Temperature. Once the tip reaches the Curie Temperature it no longer converts the HF signal heat. This provides tight temperature regulation and prevents over-temp conditions.

The tip cools down when in this stand, so it lasts longer. It takes just a few seconds to return to operating temperature.
